ADBlue ® FACT SHEET

WHAT IS AdBlue®? : AdBlue® is a trade name for AUS32 – an aqueous urea solution of about 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-inonised and demineralised water. It is injected into the exhaust gases and, as it passes through a catalytic converter, it prompts a chemical reaction that converts nitrogen oxide (NOx) into nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour.

WHY IS AdBlue® ON THE FARM? : Since 2005, legislation on diesel vehicles in the UK & Ireland and in the rest of Europe demands a drastic reduction of NOx emissions. Vehicle manufacturers, and first and foremost those of large goods vehicles including tractor manufactures, have had to re-think the exhaust system on their vehicles. More and more diesel cars, tractors and other off-road vehicles are also now equipped with the SCR system in the exhaust.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A VEHICLE RUNS OUT OF AdBlue®? : If a driver continues to ignore the AdBlue gauge and warning lamp, the tank will run dry. The vehicle’s NOx emissions levels will soar, and then the next time the vehicle is started, its power output will be significantly downrated as the empty tank and increased emissions are registered by the vehicle’s ECU. The loss of power is very noticeable to the driver. Power will be restored when the system is refilled, but the ‘event’ will be recorded on the vehicle’s ECU, and be visible to manufacturer’s service technicians.

WHAT ARE THE RULES ON THE FARM IN UK AND EUROPE for AdBlue®: The new rules apply to all engines with power outputs over 100hp, including cover tractors, combines, self-propelled foragers and sprayers. With stocks of the previous engine models dwindling, most manufacturers are now introducing complete new ranges to comply with the legislation. AdBlue® is fast becoming one of the most common chemicals on the farms.
